Clothes From The East: The Traditional Hanbok

People from countries all around the world have their own traditional clothing. In Korea, the most representative example of traditional clothing is the hanbok.

Many people have limited knowledge of hanboks. As a matter of fact, many people have mistaken hanboks for traditional Japanese garments like the kimono. This is also not to be confused with kpop costumes, which is what the modern-day musical groups wear.

If you want to learn more about the hanbok, keep reading. Soon, you will have a better understanding of the history of this garment.

What Are The Characteristics Of A Hanbok?

There are many different characteristics that are strongly associated with the hanbok. A hanbok has very vibrant colors and simple lines. The traditional hanbok does not have any pockets.

It is a style of indigenous mens and womens clothing that was traditionally worn by Korean commoners. This was considered the traditional Korean outfit. People in a higher class typically wore garments that were influenced by foreign countries. For many years, the country had many different types of traditional clothing.

What Does Hanbok Mean?

If you were to literally translate the word hanbok, you would find that it means “Korean clothing.” With that said, when people use the term hanbok, they are usually referring to something specific.

The hanbok was a piece of clothing that was most popular during Korea’s Joseon period. It covers both the arms. The hanbok consists of two pieces. There is the Jeogori, which is the upper garment. This part is worn by both men and women. There is the Chima, which is the skirt. This is worn by women only. Lastly, there is the Baji, which is a pair of loose fitting pants. This is worn by men in the Joseon Dynasty.

Who Wears The Hanbok Today?

Today, it is very unusual to see anyone wearing a hanbok in their day-to-day life. With that said, there are still plenty of occasions when Koreans do choose to don hanboks.

It is most common to see KoreansĀ buy hanbok at festivals. This is an appropriate type of formal wear during any type of traditional festival or event like Chuseok.

Many Koreans also choose to wear hanboks at formal celebrations. For example, many people wear hanboks when attending weddings. Hanboks are appropriate for any formal celebration.

Until recently, it was fairly unusual to see a Korean in a hanbok. A lot of people had given up wearing traditional clothing, and had adopted Western clothing styles instead. However, this changed in 1996. In an announcement made by the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Koreans were strongly encouraged to start wearing hanboks. The country even adopted a “Hanbok Day.”

Since then, many people have found ways to wear the hanbok. You won’t see many people in this garment when you walk down the street, but if you spend a lot of time in Korea, you are sure to see a hanbok or two.

The history of Korean hanboks is surprisingly interesting and some of it’s roots are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. While some traditional garments have all but vanished, the hanbok has managed to survive. It is likely that people will continue to wear this garment in the future. Korea has kept the hanbok alive.
